Industry terms and their meanings
Double Hung - A window that operates up and down.
Slider - A window that operates side to side.
Casement - A window that hinges on the side, or the top.
Hopper - A window that the top tilts inward. Primarily a basement window.
Picture Window - A stationary window that does not open.
Low e glass - Reduces the heat transfer through the glass. This is more important for the summer months. The less heat that is transferred keeps your house cooler, and reduces energy bills.
Argon Gas - Filling the area between the two panes of glass minimizes the convection currents within the space, which reduces the overall heat transfer between the inside and outside.
U factor - The rate of heat loss in a window.
The lower the number the better. 0.30 or less is required for the 2011 tax credit.
Solar heat gain coefficient - The fraction of solar radiation that is transmitted through the window. The number will be somewhere between 0 and 1. The closer to 0 the better.

Visable transmittance - The amount of visible light that is transmitted through a window. The number will be somewhere between 0 and 1. Closer to 1 is desired to maximize the daylight allowed through.
